Discussion Posts - World Regional Geography - Allison Chun
The discussion posts are a weekly assignment to engage us in the chapter for the week. There are a few different formats we do this in, but the main idea is still the same. We take a topic addressed in the textbook and elaborate on it. It's very helpful in developing information skills because we ask questions and expand our knowledge of something from the book we didn't understand or wanted to learn more about. Sometimes the posts introduce lots of new information, and other times they explain something from the book in simpler terms. We also reply to others' posts creating a discussion and improving communication skills. There isn't much criteria for the replies, but the idea is to engage the subject further; asking questions or adding your own bits of information. The replies add the challenge of making your post useful to your classmates and ensuring you choose a topic with lots to add on to or something you found particularly confusing. All the posts should have a balance of facts and personal insight to show you truly understand it and further engage you in the subject. I'm very good at gathering and explaining information, but I'm still working with my personal insights, though they've been better the past few weeks. Each week focuses on a different region of the world: we learn about cultures from all across the planet. The regions are divided by both cultures and continents, allowing us to learn more about the people in the area and what defines them. It definitely improves my global awareness: I gain a much better understanding of each region, what makes it unique, and what separates it from the wider area it's commonly grouped in. This assignment also works with my self-directional skills; there are many aspects, and it's crucial not to wait till the end. You must read the text book to learn what you'll be talking about. Then you need to research your topic and explain it in an easy-to-understand way. The initial posts are due Wednesday nights, and our replies are due Saturday night, but you need to reply before that deadline so your classmates can respond in time. I struggled with this the first week because I didn't really know what the work would look like, but I figured it out pretty quickly. I haven't learned much about geography in the past; anything I've learned about the different regions has been history rather than their current state of being. I'll definitely use this information in the future, maybe not for school but definitely in life.
